![]() Rich in allegory and symbolism, and suffused with darkness, tragedy, satire and the supernatural, the tales in this collection, written by a master of the short-story genre, delve into the conflict between good and evil, explore the concept of Original Sin and bring to life the moralistic and superstitious early days of the New England colonies.Ĭontains: ‘The Gentle Boy’, ‘My Kinsman, Major Molineux’, ‘Roger Malvin’s Burial’, ‘The Canterbury Pilgrims’, ‘The Seven Vagabonds’, ‘The Grey Champion’, ‘Young Goodman Brown’, ‘Wakefield’, ‘The White Old Maid’, ‘The Ambitious Guest’, ‘The Maypole of Merry Mount’, ‘The Minister’s Black Veil’, ‘Dr Heidegger’s Experiment’, ‘The Man of Adamant’ and ‘The Great Carbuncle’. ![]() Although Goodman Brown initially ignores Faith’s claims to have had disturbing nightmares, seeing her at the evil ceremony in the forest prompts him to question his wife. Faith is young, beautiful, and trusting, and Goodman Brown sees her as the embodiment of virtue. Described by Herman Melville as being “as deep as Dante”, ‘Young Goodman Brown’ is set during the Salem witch trials and features the sort of narrative ambiguities and troubling uncertainties over the reality of events that Hawthorne was known for, leading readers to ponder what they have read long after the last page has been turned. This Faustian-style exchange is not clear, however, in Nathaniel Hawthornes eminent short story Young Goodman Brown, set in and around the Puritan. Read an in-depth analysis of Goodman Brown. ![]()

Cults are a feminist issue because women and girls suffer the worst abuses at the hands of male cult leaders. The topic continues to be a burning issue as more and more survivors break their silence on the spiritual abuse they suffered. I’ve received a tremendous response to my essay on cults, published on Feminism and Religion in December last year. May all our paths be crossed by wise teachers. A few of these stories have been corroborated with books by Ursela as well. ![]() The very last section of the book focuses on some of the more prevalent stories based in Chicago. ![]() Hearing the tales and history of Joliet prison was amazing. I was also familiar with the mention of Alton, IL which I have seen investigated on a television show. This was a piece of history I have never even heard of. The beginning of the book is an amazing place to start since it told the story of a small town that no longer exists in this day on account of the land being flooded and turning into a small island. I personally appreciate more of the history, especially for portions of the state I have not visited. I read one review stating that the history was appreciated but that the alleged ghost stories seemed rather thin and brief. With this book, the focus encompassed various parts of the State of Illinois. ![]() The books I read from her mainly focus on Chicago and a few of the more immediate surrounding suburbs. It was the beginning of a seven-year relationship. They ate a lot of ramen but also drank beer ringside at a sumo wrestling match, visited the Imperial Palace, and stopped by the hotel where Lost in Translation was filmed. ![]() Ho was also witty, well read, and funny, and the trip was a success. “Oh wow,” she thought, impressed, if a bit wary. He told her he was planning to keep careful notes about the quality of each meal too. It was, he said, a “pretty traditional” algorithmic challenge, of the sort you learn in college. Then he’d written some custom code to rank the restaurants so they could be sure to visit the best ones as they went sightseeing. He’s fond of ramen dishes, and to fit as many as possible into their visit to Tokyo, he’d assembled a list of noodle places and plotted them on Google Maps. ![]() Ho, as it turned out, had a very strict and peculiar itinerary planned. Chang was a bit apprehensive they didn’t know each other well. Soon they were talking about visiting Japan together for four weeks. A computer programmer, Ho ran his own company from San Francisco. Ho was tall and slender with a sly smile, and they hit it off right away. But there was nothing about it that would make a person swoon with awe. A city with wider streets-much cleaner, and with blonder people. The wonder of these first few days didn’t last long. I spent the first weeks trying to learn the language at a survival level, wandering the city and admiring it. Thanks to the five or ten words I learned out of a conversation book during my four-day train ride, I was able to make it to a pension, a word I had jotted down in my notebook back in Istanbul. Within the week I was ready to go, and I set off through Bulgaria on a train to Berlin. Wasn’t my own savageness, my disaffection toward my surroundings, merely the result of having been unable to find these people I had met and loved in books? In this “Europe”, I expected I would learn a foreign language and read books in that language, but especially that I would finally encounter the people I had so far only known in novels.
